Dialogue on Peruvian Land Tenure and Planning

From June 12-14, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and La Molina National Agrarian University (UNALM) organized the “International Congress on Advances in Security and Tenure: Land and Forests” in Lima, Peru. Several national and international experts from different public and private institutions participated in the event, including the Ministry of the Environment, the National Forest and Wildlife Service, Regional Governments, organizations representing Amazonian indigenous peoples, and other non-governmental organizations. Peru Program Coordinator, Gustavo Suarez de Freitas, represented Earth Innovation Institute at the event and presented on the panel regarding land use and territorial planning. Mr. Suarez de Freitas highlighted the importance of a jurisdictional or landscape approach in order to reduce environmental conflicts associated with land tenure and forest use, as well as to facilitate development planning. Likewise, he emphasized the importance of simplified procedures adjusted to the reality of the Amazon, which can allow rapid progress in territorial and forestry planning processes.
