Earth Innovation Institute at COP 22

Earth Innovation Institute (EII) kicked off its participation in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP22) this week with a screening of their new short film, The Story of SISA, at an Indigenous Pavilion event organized by the Alianza Mesoamericana de Pueblos y Bosques (AMPB). The short film, co-produced by EII, Forest Trends and Nomoha Media, highlights progress the state of Acre, Brazil is making in lowering deforestation rates while improving livelihoods for forest dwelling communities.   Following the November 9 film screening, EII Scientist Maria DiGiano presented findings from the organization’s latest report entitled “Increasing REDD+ Benefits to Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities through a Jurisdictional Approach” during an Indigenous Pavilion global panel event hosted by EII, AMPB and the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA).   During the second week of the climate change conference, EII will host an official COP side event focused on Jurisdictional Sustainability: A Bottom-Up Integrated Approach to Reducing Deforestation, on November 15, with partners AMPB, Pronatura Sur, RedMOCAF, and Derecho, Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (DAR).   The side event will feature presentations by Jorge Viana, Senator and former Governor of Acre, Brazil, Fernando Meléndez Celis Regional Governor, Loreto, Peru, Dr. Victor Manuel Noriega Reátegui Regional Governor, San Martin, Peru, as well as comments by Fernando Sampaio, Executive Director of the Production, Conservation and Inclusion (PCI) program of Mato Grosso, Brazil, Gustavo Sanchez, President of Red MOCAF and executive member of the AMPB, Rosa Maria Vidal, Executive Director of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force Fund, Maria DiGiano, Scientist at Earth Innovation Institute, and Jeff Seabright, Chief Sustainability Officer at Unilever.   EII’s official side event will be followed by a panel discussion and cocktail reception, also focused on Jurisdictional Sustainability in the Tropics, featuring representatives from governments and NGOs in Peru, Brazil and Kenya.   The following day, November 16, EII will launch its new Produce and Protect Platform, an online application to help corporations determine which tropical jurisdictions are producing commodities sustainably, at the Global Landscapes Forum.
